Title supplied by cataloguer. Hand painted print, color and gold paint The triad, Amida Buddha (阿弥陀如来) in the middle with the bodhisattvas Kannon (観音菩薩) on the left and Seishi (勢至菩薩) on the right, is surrounded by the Amida sutra and "Nembutsu-marks" meant to be colored in the five colors (blue, yellow, red, white, black) as one says the nembutsu in order to reach 1000 recitations, in the smaller inside frame of marks some remain blank and so prove that the print was indeed used in this manner. This type of print used to be very widespread, and was originally conceived by the Chinese Rinzai and Obaku monk Dokutan Shōkei (独湛性瑩, 1628-1706). It seems that the original design included a blank space under the triad and over a lotus-shaped pedestal to insert the devotee's prayer, however in this print a painting of a child was entered, this could be a impication of the devodee's wish to be reborn in the Pure Land. There was a restoration atempt of the scroll - pices of paper were stuck to the back and painted. Japanese inscription on the back: 阿弥陀経三尊仏 西山 西[来]生光明寺 |
