"Every human being has a personal history and, as in all lives, this history is unique. But the vagaries of the first half of this century, together with the circumstances of my life, have led me, throughout my childhood, my adolescence and my young adulthood, to be a witness or an actor of events in which horror struggled with derision and the tragic with the miraculous. My life has been a sumptuous gift from fate. As early as 1938, I had been condemned to death by a regime and a system who slaughtered millions among my people. I should have died after my first arrest. I should have died after the second. Which is Why writing this story is to relive my life, but this time without the danger. Putting the events of my life together once again allows me to link my memories and to read them in their continuity and also in their coherence. I do not regret what I have done. What I could have accomplished, I do not miss"--back cover.
