Haber's is a tale of survival through generations, of family love, and of the consequences it brings-- Back cover. ; Naomi Haber, née Offman, was born in 1961 and grew up in Straubing (Bavaria). Her father, Israel Offman, was a Holocaust survivor born in Częstochowa, Poland, in 1925, to a religious Jewish family. In 1942, he and his family were deported from the Częstochowa ghetto to Nazi camps, where his parents and four of the six siblings perished. Offman survived eight Nazi camps, including Sachsenhausen and Auschwitz, and in April 1945 he was liberated by the U.S. Army from the camp of Ganacker. Haber's mother, Ingeborg Ebenbeck, was born in 1931 in Straubing to a German Catholic family, sympathizers with the Nazis. In order to marry Offman, she converted to Judaism, which in postwar Germany constituted no small challenge to society's "norms". Haber was born and brought up Jewish, but was sent by her parents to a Catholic school in the town of Straubing. She was confronted by religious anti-Judaism on the part of her fellow pupils, and sometimes by Nazi-like antisemitism on the part of their parents and grandparents. In the late 1970s Haber settled in the USA. Israel Offman serves as the president of the Straubing synagogue.
