Jewish education and history

A collection of articles by Moshe Aberbach. In "Ancient Roots of European Anti-Semitism and Jewish Patriotism" [a draft of a chapter from the book that father and son were writing together at the time of Moshe Aberbach's death, "European Jewish Patriotism 1789-1939"] (pp. 74-86, 138-140) argues that both phenomena - antisemitism and Jewish patriotism in the countries in which they happened to live - go back to antiquity and span the whole of Jewish history. The charges which enemies of the Jews made against them in the ancient period are essentially the same as in the modern period: cosmopolitanism, subverting the status quo, disloyalty, and comprising an "imperium in imperio" (a state within a state). The Holocaust, also, was foreshadowed, on a smaller scale, by such events as the Roman repression against Jews following the Jewish rebellions of 66-70 and 132-135, or the massacres in the period of the Black Death (1348-50). Jewish patriotism stemmed from the Jews' belief that the strong state would protect them, and from neglecting to take into account the historical hostility of non-Jews toward Jews.
