A Hungarian Jewish forensic physician describes his work dissecting the bodies of the victims of Dr. Mengele's experiments in Auschwitz, where he arrived in May 1944. His task was to record the findings and preserve interesting organs for the Kaiser Wilhelm-Institut. Describes the camp, the procedures in the gas chambers and crematoria, the life of the Sonderkommandos and their attempt at an uprising in October 1944. Chronicles the arrival of transports which signalled the end of one ghetto after another. Pp. 155-194 contain additions by the editor: notes to the text, a short biography of Nyiszli (1901-1956), information on persons mentioned in the memoir, and a bibliography.
