Shards of memory

In 1989 McGill University initiated the "Living Testimonies" program, interviewing Holocaust survivors with the aim of giving voice to survivors who are unable to present their wartime experiences in writing. Thus, the Holocaust Video Documentation Archive was established at the university. Presents third-person narratives based on interviews, 23 with Jewish survivors, one with a Gypsy survivor, and one with a Danish non-Jewish rescuer. The majority of the interviewees at the time of their interviews lived in Canada. The survivors describe their wartime experiences in Poland (e.g. Radom, Łódź, and Kraków), Hungary, Ukraine (in particular Transnistria), Czechoslovakia, Romania, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. Their experiences include ghetto life, forced labor, Nazi camps (including Auschwitz and its sub-camps), refuge, and rescue by non-Jews. Two of the compilers of this book - Yehudi Lindeman and Renata Skotnicka-Zajdman - are themselves Holocaust survivors; pieces of their recollections and their reflections are presented in the "Conclusion" (pp. 179-191).
