Une certaine histoire des Juifs du Maroc, 1860-1999

A history of the Jews of Morocco between 1860-1999. Pp. 41-54 deal with the ritual murder libel in Safi in 1863. Pp. 175-195 relate events in Fez in 1912, when 60 Jews were killed in riots following the signing of the Franco-Moroccan treaty. Pp. 357-456 discuss the unprecedented surge of antisemitism in the 1930s and the implementation of the anti-Jewish Vichy legislation in 1941. The laws on the status of the Jews affected the Jewish elite, but left the vast Jewish majority, mostly artisans and small businessmen, intact. After Xavier Vallat's visit in 1941, Jewish habitation was confined to the "mellahs" and other restrictions were introduced, but systematic despoilment or Aryanization of Jewish property did not take place. In 1942 Morocco was liberated by American forces. Pp. 515-534 examine the issue of Zionist solidarity and Arab solidarity in Morocco around the time of the establishment of the State of Israel. Describes the effects of the pogroms in Oujda and Djerada in 1948, and the massive emigration of Jews to Israel and other countries.
