Dubnow, the well-known Jewish historian, was born in Mstislavl, Belarus in 1860. This autobiography recounts his life up to 1933, including comments on his writings and activities against the background of the historical events that he witnessed. He quotes extensively from his diary, written between 1915-33. Inter alia, relates to antisemitism and pogroms in the Russian Empire (e.g. Kishinev, 1903), pogroms during the revolution of 1905 (pp. 513-522), as well as the expulsion of the Jews from the frontier zone in Russia during World War I. Dubnow was active on behalf of the expelled Jews (pp. 717-724). In 1922 Dubnow left Saint Petersburg for Berlin. Comments on the postwar atmosphere in Germany, observing the growth of fascism. Pp. 1069-1106 deal with events in Germany in 1930-33. When the Nazis came to power, he and his family moved to Riga. Dubnow was shot by a Nazi in the ghetto of Riga in 1941.
