In Iraq, in the 1940s, many wealthy Jews were persecuted by the government for economic gain. In 1950 Jews were allowed to leave the country, with almost no possessions, if they gave up their citizenship. Although their assets were frozen from 1951, ca. 120,000 Jews immigrated to Israel at the time. In Egypt, many Jews were arrested with the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948. In 1949-50, ca. 20,000 Jews left the country legally or illegally; most of their possessions were confiscated. In Syria, persecution began in 1947 and worsened in the 1950s, when Jewish property was confiscated and most of the Jews left the country without possessions. also mentions Jews in Lebanon, who were not persecuted, but left the country in the 1950s-60s.
