Analyzes 50 years of Jewish themes and characters on popular American television programs (dramas, comedies, miniseries, etc.). Ch. 3 (pp. 103-132), "Anti-Semitism, " focuses on opposition to antisemitism voiced by Jewish and non-Jewish TV characters. also deals with subjects such as "country club" antisemitism, prejudice of in-laws, the perception of Jews as being different, antisemitism in the context of general bigotry, synagogue vandalism, opposition to antisemitism by Christian clergy, Holocaust revisionism, and anti-Zionism. Ch. 4 (pp. 133-171), "The Holocaust, " stresses that, despite the problem of trivialization, television is the sole source of information about the genocide of the Jews for vast numbers of people. Discusses portrayal of the ghettos and concentration camps, Righteous Gentiles, American Jewry during the Holocaust, Nazi war criminals, Germany after the war, the survivors, and the post-survivor era. Notes that television is starting to deal with ethical questions and even theological dilemmas related to the Holocaust. Pp. 173-179 in ch. 5, "Israel, " deal with television's treatment of Israel and the Holocaust and with Israel's hunt for Nazi war criminals.
