Victims and survivors

A history of the Holocaust of Dutch Jewry. Traces all the stages: identification of Jews by the Nazis, restrictions, isolation, deportation, and murder. A greater proportion of Jews from the Netherlands were killed than from other countries of Western Europe, partly due to the fact that the Nazi grip in the Netherlands was much tighter than in France and Belgium. The Jewish Council set up by the Germans in 1941 was much too cooperative; although they did not collaborate with the Nazis, Jewish leaders made many mistakes and miscalculations. Not many Dutch people helped Jews, and the whole Dutch bureaucracy, voluntarily or not, became an accomplice in the Nazi persecution of Jews. Examines ways of Jewish survival in the Netherlands, largely in hiding. Relatively few Jews dared to live illegally, with forged documents.
