Bergen-Belsen, Frauen im Konzentrationslager

A booklet published to accompany an exhibition which opened in Bergen-Belsen in April 1994. Renate Riebe, "Frauen in Konzentrationslagern: Ravensbrück, Bergen-Belsen" (pp. 7-11), describes conditions for women in these camps. Except for the candidates for prisoner exchange in Bergen-Belsen, few Jewish women were interned in these camps until the last stages of the war, when they were brought in for forced labor, and when women arrived from Auschwitz and other camps evacuated due to the Soviet advance. At this time conditions became catastrophic because of overcrowding and total lack of facilities. Bodo Dringenberg, "Ein Gang durch die Ausstellung" (pp. 48-58), describes the exhibition and discusses the significance of the items displayed. The remainder of the booklet contains photographs of items from the exhibition, along with excerpts from women's diaries and reminiscences and brief biographies of individual women.
