The Jews of Tortosa, 1373-1492

A collection of 379 notarial protocols (Spanish translation of Latin originals) from the Archive of the province of Tarragona, providing information on various aspects of Jewish life in Tortosa between 1373-1492. The introduction by Yom Tov Assis, in English and in Spanish (xl pp.), reviews briefly the history of the community and its organization. The Jews were subject to wearing a special gown and badge and to restrictions on food-selling, and were a target of missionary activities and attacks during Holy Week. The wave of forced conversions in 1391 was followed by enclosure in the ghetto in 1415 and the final expulsion in 1492.
