Kunst zum Überleben

The catalogue of an exhibition of drawings by fifteen professional artists imprisoned in Auschwitz, portraying life in the camp, including the interiors of barracks and infirmaries, forced labor, selections, and killing by injection. Two of the artists were Jewish; most of the others were Polish political prisoners. The drawings are accompanied by detailed explanations of the conditions portrayed. Several of the artists also did work for the SS; Dinah Gottliebova, a member of the Czech Jewish group gassed on 8 March 1944, was saved from death by Mengele for whom she made medical drawings. The catalogue is preceded by short essays on the Holocaust, Auschwitz, and killing by injections.
