In parliament elections held in Ukraine in October 2012, the rightist and agressively nationalist All-Ukrainian Union Svoboda (Freedom) party gained more than 10% of the vote and became the fifth faction in parliament. The party, which was established in 1991, has a long record of racist and antisemitic rhetoric and anti-Jewish activities, including cases of vandalism. It maintains a veritable cult of the wartime antisemitic Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and Ukrainian Insurgent Army, as well as of the SS-Division "Galizien", established by the Nazis. To all accusations of antisemitism and neo-Nazism, Svoboda leaders answer: "We are not antisemites we are only defending the interests of Ukrainians". Svoboda's electoral success indicates a change in Ukrainian society, in particular its disappointment with domination of pro-Russian elements, increasing corruption, and the deteriorating economic situation.
