Photograph is printed in a book with a description beneath printed description: "(Ecclesiastes, ii:6.).--'I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees.' There are three of these pools, and above them is a large building which we see in the picure, a sort of half castle and half tavern, which is said to be of Saracenic origin. To the west of this there is a spring, which, in connection with three others, supplies the pools with water. These pools are partly excavated in the rocky bed of the valley, and partly built of large stones. They are so arranged that the bottom of each pool is higher than the top of the one next below it. In this way it is possible to fill every pool with water. According to Josephus, there was a city near Bethlehem which had gardens and rivulets of water, to which Solomon was in the habit of taking a morning drive. These pools are about three miles southwest of Bethlehem." Copyright year and photographer's name are at the bottom of the photograph, along with "Franklin Co Eng-Chi".
