Shabtai Rosenne Collection

Shabtai Rosenne (born as Sefton Wilfred David Rowson on November 24, 1917 in London; † September 21, 2010 in Jerusalem), was an Israeli lawyer and diplomat. Among other things, he served as Israel's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1967 to 1971, and as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva from 1971 to 1974. He was also a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 1962 to 1971 and of the Permanent Court of Arbitration from 1994 to 1996. For his work, he was awarded the Israel Prize in Law in 1960 and the Manley O. Hudson Medal of the American Society for International Law in 1999.

תקציר ביוגרפי Shabtai Rosenne (Sefton Wilfred David Rowson) was born in London, in 1917. Rosenne completed his academic studies in law at the University of London in 1938, studying naval law. After military service in the Royal Air Force from 1940 to 1946, he worked in the political department of the Jewish Agency, first in London and later in Jerusalem. With the founding of the State of Israel, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for which he served as legal advisor from 1948 to 1967. In this role he was, among other things, a member of the Israeli delegation to the negotiations for the armistice agreement of 1949 and regularly to the sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations. During this time he also received his doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1940 Rosenne became admitted solicitor of the High Court of England. In 1960, Shabtai Rosenne was appointed ambassador and sent by the Israeli government to Argentina to deal with the political and diplomatic upheavals that resulted from the arrest of Adolf Eichmann and his deportation to Israel. He also represented Israel at the conferences that negotiated the Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982, as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1967 to 1971, to the UN Commission on Human Rights from 1968 to 1970, and as Permanent Representative from 1971 to 1974 at the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva. He was then appointed special ambassador and worked in the diplomatic service until 1982. Between 1989 and 2000, he represented the United States, Yugoslavia and Japan in several cases before the International Court of Justice. After the end of his diplomatic career, he also taught as a professor at Bar-Ilan University and as a visiting professor at various foreign universities and in 1954 and 2001 at the Hague Academy of International Law. Rosenne was married in 1940 and had two sons. He died in Jerusalem in 2010 at the age of 92.
