On January 23 1995 the Israel Prize judges committee announced its decision for the year 5755. The Prize is awarded each year to individuals that have made special contributions to the state and society at a ceremony held on Independence Day. The recipients this year are Itzhak Ben-Aharon and Ada Sereni, Itzhak Ben-Aharon was born in 1906 and began his zionist activities in the youth movement Hashomer Hatzair in Poland. He later becawe involved in the young kibbutz movement and in 1925 was sent to help the Jews of Gersany in their increasingly desperate struggle against the Nazis. During the Second World War he was drafted into the British army and was in fact held prisoner by the Germans for four years. After the establishment of the State of Israel, Ben-Aharon was a founding leader of Mapam. Later he bacame a member of Knesset and a Government Minister of Transport and Communications. In the 1960s he initiated the movement to form the Alignment and in the 1970s was Director General of the Histadrut Workers' Federation, Today Ben-Aharon lives on Kibbutz Givat Haim. Ada Sereni was born in 1905 in Rome. She made aliya to Mandatary Palestine with her husband in 1927 and together they formed part of the group that started what is today one of Israel's largest kibbutzim - Givat Brenner. Later she became head of the network that led to Israel tens of thousands of illegal immigrants from Italy. In the War of Independence she organised the snuggling of shiploads of weapons to the fledgling Jewish armies. After the establishment of the State she was involved in aliya and absorption.
