יחזקאל קאופמן (1889-1963) היה חוקר מקרא ופילוסוף של הדת. למד בבית מדרשו של חיים טשרנוביץ (הרב 'צעיר') באודסה, לאחר מכן המשיך את לימודיו באקדמיה למדעי היהדות והמזרח בסנט פטרבורג, ולבסוף קיבל תואר דוקטור באוניברסיטת ברן בשנת 1918. לאחר עלייתו ארצה בשנת 1928 לימד בבית הספר 'ריאלי' בחיפה. בשנת 1949 מונה לפרופסור למקרא באוניברסיטה העברית, תפקיד שמילא עד פרישתו ב-1957.

Yeḥezkel Kaufmann (1889-1963), was a biblical scholar and philosopher of religion. Born in Dunajiwzi, Ukraine, he attended the seminary of Chaim Tchernowitz (Rav Ẓa'ir) in Odessa, then continued his studies at the Academy of Jewish and Oriental Studies in St. Petersburg, and finally received a Ph.D. from the University of Bern in 1918. From 1920 he lived in Berlin, in 1928 he immigrated to Israel and for the next 20 years taught at Re'ali School in Haifa. From 1949 until 1957 he was professor of Biblical Studies at Hebrew University. Of his many writings, two works stand out: Golah ve-Nekhar, "Exile and the Alien Land", and Toldot ha-Emunah ha-Yisre'elit, "The History of Israelite Faith". He was awarded the Israel Prize in Jewish Studies for the year 1958 and also two Bialik Prizes, one in 1973 for Golah ve-Nekhar, and 1977 for Toldot ha-Emunah ha-Yisre'elit. He was a member of the Israel National Academy of Sciences from 1959, and a member of the literary council of the Bialik Institute. |
