ארנו נאדל (1878-1943) היה סופר, מוזיקאי, מלחין, מורה וצייר. הוא נולד בווילנה בליטא. לאחר הכשרתו אצל החזן אדוארד בירנבאום בקניגסברג עבר לברלין שם למד בסמינר למורים יהודיים, ולאחר מכן עבד כמורה ומוזיקאי. הוא אסף שירי עם יהודיים ומוזיקת בית כנסת, וכתב ביקורות מוזיקה ומאמרים על תורת המוזיקה. ב-1938 הוא נלקח לזקסנהאוזן למספר שבועות, ולמרות שהיה לו ולאשתו את הניירת הדרושה להגירה לארצות הברית, הוא לא הצליח לעזוב. במקום זאת, הוא נצטווה לעבוד בספריית המשרד הראשי לביטחון הרייך (Reichssicherheitshauptamt) ב-1942, ויחד עם אשתו גורשו לאושוויץ ונרצחו שם ב-1943. חלק מהארכיון שלו שמור בספריית המוזיקה היהודית שרייבר בפילדלפיה.

תקציר ביוגרפי Arno Nadel was born in Vilna on October 5, 1878 as the son of a mechanic, and early on showed a musical talent. At seventeen he began studies at the Jewish Teacher's Institute in Berlin. In 1916, Nadel was appointed choir master and cantor of the synagogue am Kottbusser Ufer in Berlin, and shortly thereafter he became the musical supervisor of all Berlin synagogues. Besides being a musician he also show a gift for poetry, and until 1935 he published several volumes of poetry. He also translated works from Yiddish. Under the Nazis his books were burned and any further publication was forbidden. His poetry and his readings of it were most popular during the 1920s, since the poetry was influenced by Taoism. He collected and edited Jewish folk songs and synagogue music, in 1923 he was asked to compile an anthology of synagogue music for the Berlin Jewish community. He finished this work in 1938 and had intended to publish it in seven volumes. His artwork was shown at the first show of support group for Jewish artists in the arcade of the Berlin theater. He was initially arrested in 1938 and sent to Sachsenhausen for several weeks. He and his wife had assembled the paperwork for immigration to the United States and had it approved, but they were not able to leave because of the severe restrictions imposed by the Nazis. He was sent to forced labour in the library of the Reich security main office in 1942. On March 12 1943, he and his wife Anna (Anna Sara Guhrauer, born 13.8.1879, according to the transport list kept at the Arolsen Archives https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/document/127212837) were deported to Auschwitz and most likely murdered immediately. He had given his collection and archives to Käthe Kollwitz, much of it was destroyed in the war. Part of the remainder is being kept in Philadelphia, another part is the present collection at the National Library of Israel.
