Al-Fajr (The Dawn) was a weekly cultural and arts magazine. The first issue was published in Jaffa in 1935. The administrative director was 'Arif Sulayman Al-'Azzuni, the owner was Dr. Iskander al-Halabi, and the editor-in-chief was Mahmoud Sayf al-Din al-Irani. The newspaper was co-edited by a group of the finest writers in Palestine and Arab countries. The objective of the magazine was stated in the first issue as: “The intellectual movement is still unclear in nature, ambiguous in color, and confused in its purpose. The writers’ efforts are wasted here and lack a literary message that can unite the people and their voice, and clarify their purpose. It is hereby declared that the purpose of Al-Fajr is to represent all intellectual currents in literature, society, art, and science.” This holistic cultural approach was reflected in the magazine’s content. It was a veritable storehouse of knowledge and included diverse writings. The magazine also focused on local arts and published special advertisements of companies seeking to promote Palestinian art. Al-Fajr was published for only two years, but represented an important stage in the development of Palestinian culture. During the Palestinian revolt, many newspapers and magazines stopped publishing, including Al-Fajr.
