| "Rebuild Thy House" -- "Music wakes the soul, and lifts it high, and wings it with sublime desires, and fits it to bespeak the Deity."- Addison. One of the ultimate avenues of communication with one's G-d is through song. The written and spoken word suffices in many ways, but only in song does the soul enter into a meaningful dialogue with its creator. The art of song in prayer bespeaks the expression of genuine communication between the worshipper and his Maker. Similarly the Talmudic student expresses the emotional impact of his experience through the medium of song. Thus, how natural that an eighteen year old Talmudic student should find himself swept up in the fervor of his learning with song and melody. What is so remarkable about this composer is the manner in which this album came into being. Picture, if you will, then, this youngster in his late teens, who composed and retained in his mind, over a period of four years, some thirty songs, with lyrics taken from the Bible and Psalms. Lacking any formal musical training, he was unable to place these melodies on paper until several years later. Then, in St. Louis, Mo., while serving a pulpit in that city, and with the help of a cantor, the music was transcribed into musical notation. The next step was to procure the services of an outstanding arranger, and the fortunate selection of Seth Greiner, Musical Arranger for the world renowned Muny Opera of St. Louis, was made. The composer and arranger then selected ten songs for orchestration and choral arrangement. The musical arrangements of Mr. Greiner, as can be clearly evidenced on this record, infinitely enhance the original compositions. The arrangements are both dramatic and sensitive; dramatic when aimed at giving expression to the joy and ecstasy of the Jew, and yet so sensitive when expressing the faith and longing of the Jewish people. The colorful and creative arrangements you hear on this album testify to the artistry of Seth Greiner. As so often happens in life, this Talmudic student's dreams were destined to await their fruition a few years later in Jacksonville, Florida. While serving a pulpit there, he began the final search for a conductor. At this point, good fortune took the form of a meeting between the composer and Dr. Ralph G. Long, Professor of Music at Jacksonville University. Upon serious consideration of the ten musical scores, Dr. Long enthusiastically accepted the enormous task of selecting the out- standing musicians and chorus that you hear on this record. He also coordinated all the integral steps that are so important in a production of this kind. The perfect blend of artists, orchestra and chorus are proof of the tremendous success he achieved. The music which is heard on this record encompasses the multi-moods of the Jew the hope, faith, longing and joy of his history are expressed in these songs and music. So deeply did these melodies inspire even the great professionals that two of Judaism's prime exponents of music, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, the internationally acclaimed Jewish folksinger, and Cantor Sholom Katz, one of this generation's cantorial giants, appear on one album, together for the first and thus far, only time. Yet one need not profess his belief in order to enjoy the searing emotional experiences of these melodies. The deeply religious, the doubter and the confirmed iconoclast may all en- joy the magnificent beauty of this music of a man's soul. "There is a gate in heaven that is open only through song," say the mystics. Who is to say what inner gates of man's essence this music will touch? Therefore, sit back and relax.
