| השיר מבוסס על לחנו של שיר עממי צרפתי בשם Chevallier de la table ronde. גם השיר המקורי עוסק בשתיה ויין. ; אליהו הכהן מספר תחילת שירת השיר: "לפי הסימוכין שבידי, השיר הושר לראשונה במחרוזות השירים שליוו את ריקודי ההורה של שנות הארבעים. היו לשיר שני נוסחי פתיחה, של אופטימיסטים ופסימיסטים. הפסימיסטים שרו: 'כשנמות', והאופטימיסטים: 'אם נמות'...
