	אֲנִי וְהַסָּבְתָא יָשַׁבְנוּ בְּצַוְתָא לְיַד מְדוּרָה בֶּחָצֵר. אֲנִי מִשְׁתּוֹקֵק לְסִפּוּר מְרַתֵּק וְהַסָּבְתָא צִ'יזְבַּט תְּסַפֵּר. סַפְּרִי לִי, סַפְּרִי לִי, אֵיזוֹ מַעֲשִׂיָּה עַל אוֹתָם הַיָּמִים וְעַל מַה שֶּׁהָיָה... וְהַגְזִימִי הֵיטֵב, סָבָתִי אֵיךְ אוֹמְרִים בְּעִבְרִית? 'צַ'זְבְּטִי!' הַסָּבְתָא סִפְּרָה אֵיךְ בַּנֶּגֶב שָׁמְרָה כְּשֶׁהָיָה עוֹד שׁוֹמֵם וְיָבֵשׁ עִם סְטֶן וְרִימוֹן מוּל צִבְאוֹת הֶהָמוֹן הִיא אָמְרָה: 'נִתְגַּבֵּר, מַעֲלֵישׁ!' סַפְּרִי לִי, סַפְּרִי לִי... כְּשֶׁסָּבְתָא נִזְכֶּרֶת מִיָּד מִתְפָּאֶרֶת כֵּיצַד עַל כֻּלָּם הִיא רָכְבָה אֵיךְ סַבָּא אַבְנֵר אַחֲרֶיהָ חִזֵּר וְגִלָּה לָהּ תָּמִיד אַהֲבָה. סַפְּרִי לִי, סַפְּרִי לִי... הֵיכָן הַיָּמִים שֶׁעָשִׂינוּ חַיִּים וְעִם זוּג מִכְנָסַיִם קְצָרִים. לָנֶצַח כָּל דּוֹר עוֹד יֵדַע וְיִזְכֹּר: כֵּן הָיוּ הַיָּמִים יְקָרִים! סַחְתֵּין שֶׁסִפַּרְתְּ לִי אֶת הַמַּעֲשִׂיָּה עַל אוֹתָם הַיָּמִים וְעַל מַה שֶּׁהָיָה... וְהִגְזַמְתְּ בְּוַדַּאי לֹא מְעַט אֵיךְ אוֹמְרִים בְּעִבְרִית? זֶה 'צִ'יזְבַּט'!

	אבשלום כהן מחבר ומלחין השיר, מספר על השיר: את "הסבתא בנגב" כתבתי בסוף 1947 כשהתגייסתי לצבא וראיתי בחורות אוחזות בנשק. התפעלתי כל כך ותיארתי אותן כשיהיו סבתות והנגב יהיה מיושב והן שם יספרו לנכדים את הימים במלחמת העצמאות.
