| Scope and content |
The pair had arraged to meet on the day before implemention of the planned phased withdrawal of IDF troops from Gaza Strip and Jericho according to the israel-PLO Declaration of Principles signed in Washington DC last September. The intention was to give a last chance to the deadline by affording the leaders an opportunity to iron out differences. But the meeting was unsuccessful and the pair annouced that they would meet again in a further 10 days. Rabin and Arafat refused to shake hands for photographers but nevertheless held their first ever private meeting - which lasted 80 minutes. "We decided to give ourseves a certain time to rethinkײ 10 days is nothing in a conflict that has lasted 100 years. Photo shows: President Mubarak at the press conference. |
