Title Today ministers Yuval Ne'eman of Tehiya and Rehavam Ze'evi of Moledet resigned from the government coalition.
Scope and content The resignations which will take effect in two days time (21/1/92) will mean that Prime Minister's Likud led coalition only holds 59 of the 120 seats in parliament. This will certainly mean that general elections due to be held no later than 3rd November this year, will be brought forward probably to May or June. If the Likud fell from a no-confidence motion the President would call upon Labour leader Shimon Peres to try and form an interim government. it is very unlikely that Peres would be able to form such a government given the mix at.the present Knesset as none of the ultra religious parties would it is brought side with the Labour party. Shamir would be asked to maintain a caretaker administration until a new election is called. The rules of the Knesset state that a caretaker administration cannot be brought down by a vote of no-confidence. Labour leader Shimon Peres would like to see peace talks halted until there is a general election. Between now and the election there will be hard fought inter -party rivalry between Peres and Yitzhak Rabin as to who is to lead the Labour party at the election. Shamir also has challenges from within his party, including the Housing Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister David Levy. The position of the religious parties following an election is uncertain. It is true that the electorate who vote for a religious party wouId probably continue to do so, but the equation is non changed somewhat when considering the thousands of new voters two have come from the former Soviet Union. Nobody. can say with certainty how, the new immigrants will vote. What can be said is that they will probably not vote for a religious ticket as most of the Soviet Jews have little religious background and the actions of the religious parties over the past three years have alienated them from many of the voters, bo.
