Die Stadt Safed liegt auf einem Hügel, ringsum vom Naftali-Gebirge umgeben, und wurde nach der furchtbaren Erdbebenkatastrophe vom Jahre 1836 neu aufgebaut. Die Zeit der Entstehung Safets ist unbekannt, berühmt wurde sie erst in den letzten Jahrhunderten durch ihre rabbinischen Schulen mit den grossen Gelehrten Rabbi Josef Karo, Verfasser des Schulchan Aruch und Rabbi Isaac Lurja Aschkenasi, der mit Recht als der Begründer der neuen Kabbala betrachtet werden kann. In den um die Stadt befindlichen Gräbern, sollen viele der Tanaim und Amoraim zur Ruhe gebettet sein. Safed zählt 13,400 Seelen davon 5100 Mohamedaner, 1600 Christen und 6700 Juden. Die Mehrzahl der jüdischen Einwohner sind Aschkenasim und herrscht unter ihnen grosse Armuth. Mit Ausnahme eines kleinen, von deutschen Juden ausgehaltenen Krankenhauses, giebt es dort keine Wohlthätigkeitsanstalten. Die in jüngster Zeit in der Umgebung Safeds gegründeten Kolonien und die in ihr neu eröffnete Schule trugen viel zur Besserung der Lage der dortigen Juden bei. Vor einigen Jahren kauften mehrere junge Leute aus Safed ein Grundstück jenseits des Genezareth-See, die heutige Kolonie Bnei Jehudah, welche jetzt von dem Chovevei-Zion in London unterstützt wird." |
