Photographs are printed in a book with a printed description beneath in French printed description: "Immédiatement devant la porte de Jaffa, à gauche, la route de Bethléem descend dans la vallée de Hinnom qui borde la ville et s'unit à celle de Josaphat.-- Elle est mentionée dans la Bible à propos des frontières entre les tribus de Juda et de Benjamin. C'est dans ces parages qu'était le Tophet où l'on offrait les enfants à Moloch. Josias fit souiller le lieu afin qu'il ne servit plus à de tels sacrifices. Mais longtemps après il était encore un objet d'horreur pour les juifs. On y précipitait peut-être les coupables de là le nom de Géhenne pour désigner l'enfer. Les flanes méridionaux de cette vallée sont tout percés de grottes sépulcrales dont la plupart remontent à une haute antiquité.
