Description The initial word of the book of Lamentations is written in a panel in the lower part of the two left text columns. The letters are written in gold on foliate scrolls. The crowned Nebuchadnezzar is depicted on the left of the panel, riding a lion. He holds a snake as the reins and raises his right hand (alluding to II Kings 24:10). An inscription is written outside the panel, on the left, נבוכדנצר צר ואויב ינופף ידו הו בת ציון גבעת ירושלים רוכב על הארי ירסנו נחש 'Nebuchadnezzar the enemy, raising his hand, Oh, Daughter of Zion hill of Jerusalem, riding on a lion harnessed by a snake.' The inscription is based on the Bablylonian Talmud, Tractate Shabat, 150a: "Nebuchadnezzar rode upon a male lion to whose head he had tied a snake in fulfillment of what is said, 'and the beasts of the field also have I given him to serve him"' (Jer. 27:6). Nebuchadnezzar's face is erased. Jerusalem is depicted as a turretted walled city. The last column of Ecclesiastes, is written in the shape of a goblet, above the initial word panel of the book of Lamentations.
