Books within books: Hebrew Fragments in European Libraries" is a database, catalogue and a network of scholars working on fragments of medieval Hebrew books and documents reused in book bindings and notarial files in various libraries and archives in Europe, Israel, the USA and Canada. It was created in 2007 as the initiative of several projects, which have been carried on at a national level or in a specific library or archive. “Books within Books” is directed by prof. Judith Olszowy-Schlanger, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris, and includes today about a hundred of partner institutions across the world. So far, the database contains more than 6500 digital images and descriptions of the fragments – only in part published by the scientific committee of “BwB” - and the number of accessible descriptions is constantly increasing. Approximately 1250 descriptions and images of Hebrew fragments have been already published by the Scientific Committee of BwB and are freely accessible and available for the public consultation. The numbers of fragments identified in each country vary from several dozens (Switzerland) to thousands (Italy).
