"חכם יוסף חיים מבגדד, הידוע בכינויו "בן איש חי", היה מגדולי חכמי ישראל. הוא היה מנהיג ציבור נערץ, פוסק ומקובל, פייטן ודרשן, ומחבר פורה שהספיק לכתוב כשמונים ספרים בכל ענפי התורה. הבן איש חי הכיר לעומק את נבכי נפש האדם ואת דפוסי פעולתה, וידע להציע דרכי תיקון והתפתחות אישית, רוחנית ודתית. אף על פי שתורתו רלוונטית היום מתמיד, היא כמעט נעדרת מן השיח המחשבתי והקיומי בן ימינו והגיעה העת להחזירה לתודעה. שערי חיים נולד מתוך מסע רוחני ולימודי בעקבות תורת הבן איש חי. זוהי הזמנה להיכרות עם תורתו הקיומית, שהיא מפסגות היצירה של יהדות המזרח. היא נוגעת לחיינו העכשוויים, וביכולתה להציע כלים ומחשבות לשאלות המעסיקות את היהודי בן זמננו, ולכונן מפגש חי ותוסס בין התורה לחיים. הספר מבקש להנגיש מעט מתורתו של הבן איש חי לשפתו ולהוויית חייו של הקורא המודרני, ולהביאו בשערי תיקון הנפש והמידות, לימוד התורה, יסודות האמונה וקיום המצוות. ד"ר חזי כהן, איש תנ"ך, מלמד בישיבת מעלה גלבוע ובמדרשת עין הנצי"ב. עוסק בתורתם של חכמי המזרח ובהגותו של הבן איש חי, ועורך האתר "חכימא: סיפורים ורוח מחכמי המזרח". ספרו הראשון, "חוכמה מקדם: סיפורי חכמים מקהילות הספרדים ועדות המזרח" (2016), ראה אור בהוצאת "ידיעות ספרים" -- (מהכריכה האחורית).
