"נערה שישבה ליד הדלת והקשיבה יחד עם שאר הבחורים לא נראתה כלוחמת מנוסה וקשוחה במיוחד. היא הקשיבה כל כולה לדברי המפקד, ונדמה היה כאילו היא רוצה לחרות במוחה כל פרט ופרט לבל תשכח, לבל תטעה. הייתה זו הפעולה הממשית הראשונה שיצאה אליה... השנים הן 1948-1946, שנים סוערות בארץ-ישראל. זוהי תקופת סיום מלחמת-העולם השנייה, ימי ההעפלה ומאבקו של היישוב היהודי בשלטון המנדט הבריטי. זוהי תקופת הפלמ"ח ופעולותיו, הכרזת המדינה ומלחמת העצמאות. על רקע השנים הסוערות האלה נפגשים זהרה ושמוליק, ונרקם ביניהם סיפור אהבה מרגש ומטלטל, שתחילתו אושר גדול וסופו עצב, כאב ובדידות. דבורה עומר מספרת: "לא אני ממציאה את סיפוריי, החיים עצמם עושים זאת במקומי. זוהי פרשה הלקוחה מהחיים. שמעתי את סיפור אהבתם של זהרה ושמוליק, קראתי אותו במכתביהם ודמעתי, חשתי אותם, כאבתי ואז כתבתי." -- מן הכריכה האחורית.
