"ספרו של חוקר המקרא איציק פלג דן בחגי ישראל מנקודת מבט חינוכית-ערכית. החגים ממלאים תפקיד כפול: הם משקפים זהות ושייכות לאומית, ובו-בזמן מעצבים אותן. הצו "וְהִגַּדְתָּ לְבִנְךָ" נועד להבטיח שהבנים יכירו את תולדות העם, בדרך חווייתית – אולם הצו "וְהִגַּדְתָּ לְבִנְךָ" מתחיל בצו "והקשבת לבנך". הספר מתמקד בשלושה נושאים: זהות, שייכות, זיכרון. הקורא ימצא הדגמות ביחס לשינויים ותמורות שחלו בחגים וביחס אליהם במרוצת הדורות. שינויים ותמורות אלה אִפשרו, בכל לדור ודור, הזדהות עם הזהות והשייכות הלאומית. פרק נרחב מוקדש לחג הפסח כמשקף את חגי ישראל ואת גישתו החינוכית של הספר כולו. כמו כן, המחבר מזמין אותנו לצאת למסע בעקבות "מועדי העצבות" בלוח השנה. המסע מלמד שהחגים מעמיסים על בנינו ימי אבל ועצבות רבים ומכבידים. היום – לאחר קום המדינה – מתבקש לעודד את השמחה בחגים, שכן חרף המאבקים הפנימיים בחברה הישראלית ביחס למסורת היהודית, מדינת ישראל מאפשרת נינוחות ריבונית אשר הייתה חסרה בתקופת הגלות. ביחס לחגי ישראל הספר מציע רעיונות שיתנו ביטוי ראוי לתקווה ושמחה, ככתוב: "וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְּחַגֶּךָ" (דברים טז 13). " -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
