"דוד בן גוריון הניח שורה של בעיות ושאלות מדיניות, חברתיות וערכיות, שישראל מתמודדת איתן עד היום. מכאן הרלוונטיות של פועלו וסיפור חייו. כמות גדולה מאוד של חומר ארכיוני בלתי מוכר עד כה מאירה באור חדש את עוצמתו, מעלותיו והישגיו, מגבלותיו, חולשותיו וכישלונותיו גם יחד. הוא היה איש מרתק. רבים העריצוהו ומתגעגעים אליו כמנהיג לאומי עם חזון ותקווה, מדינאי נועז עם יושרה. אחרים שנאו אותו כפוליטיקאי כוחני, פלגני, קדורני ולא אחת גחמני. אך רק מעטים ידעו לפענח את צפונות דמותו המורכבת של האיש מאחורי המיתוס. הוא היה מלא ניגודים וסתירות - וידע זאת: "אם תבדוק את יומני בשיטות של ביקורת המקרא," כתב פעם, "[...] תוכל להוכיח שיומן זה נכתב בעצם על ידי שני אנשים שונים שחיו בתקופות שונות." הנה יכולת ונכונות להתבוננות עצמית רגישה ואמיצה; גם היא עשתה אותו לדמות מסקרנת כל כך." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
