"בלילה של 12 בפברואר 1963 ישבו שלושה גברים במכוניתם בעיר לראך שבגרמניה וארבו לתנועה כלשהי בבניין שמעבר לרחוב. המשמרת שלהם החלה בשעת אחר צהריים מאוחרת, ועכשיו דומה היה שבכל רגע עשוי טרפם לצאת ממחבואו והם יזנקו לפעולה. שלושתם היו סוכני מוסד שנבחרו על ידי קצין המבצעים של הארגון באירופה, יצחק שמיר, להשתתף במבצע הנועז והמסוכן ביותר מעבר לים - התנקשות בחייו של אזרח זר. היעד היה ד"ר הנס קליינווכטר, מדען גרמני. חודשים ספורים קודם לכן הורה ראש הסמוסד דאז איסר הראל להוציא אל הפועל את מבצע דמולקס, תוכנית נועזת שמטרתה להפחיד - ואם צריך, לחסל - מדענים מגרמניה המערבית שעזרו לנשיא מצרים, גמאל עבד אל-נאצר, לפתח טילים ארוכי טווח שיאיימו על מדינת ישראל. חיסולו של קליינווכטר, כך קיווה הראל, ירתיע מדענים אחרים שעבדו במצרים ויחסל את תכנית הטילים המסוכנת. מבצע דמוקלס חושף את אחד המבצעים השאפתניים והנועזים של המודיעין הישראלי"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
