"אליציה טאבור חשבה שאין שום סיבה שתגרום לה לחזור לעיר הולדתה, שאותה עזבה לפני שנים. ובכל זאת, היא עולה על רכבת מוורשה בדרכה לולבז'ין במטרה לסקר את היעלמותם המסתורית של שלושה ילדים מקומיים. אליציה נחושה להישאר ממוקדת במשימתה העיתונאית ולא לתת לביקור הזה להיהפך לביקור נוסטלגי, שהרי ולבז'ין מסמלת בעיקר את מה שאבד לה: אחותה הגדולה אווה שהצילה אותה אך לא הצליחה להציל את עצמה, אביה שנפטר לפני שנים אחדות ואימה שמעולם לא נצרבה בזיכרונה. אליציה מגלה במהרה שהסיפורים והאמת על העבר חבויים בכל פינה ומחכים להיחשף. הם נשמרו בחריצי רצפת העץ של הבית הגרמני שהיה בית ילדותה, ב"ארמון הנסיך" הסמוך שבו גרה הנסיכה דייזי עד לפלישת הנאצים, ובקרחת היער הסמוכה לו, שיכולה להעיד אכזריות אנושית מהי. אט אט מתגלים לאליציה הסיפורים שלה עצמה ושל הסובבים אותה. הסיפורים משלימים זה את זה ונשזרים במפתיע בהתרחשויות העכשוויות בעיר הולדתה"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
