"ספר מציג תמונה רחבה ומגוונת ביותר של האסלאם. הוא דן בשורה של נושאים, וביניהם עיקרי אמונה, הלכה, תאולוגיה, פילוסופיה, מיסטיקה, תרבות וחברה, משחר האסלאם ועד ימינו. מבחינה גאוגרפית הוא מקיף אזורים נרחבים: המזרח התיכון, צפון אפריקה, תת־היבשת ההודית, מזרח אסיה ואירופה. הספר מאפשר לקוראים לעמוד מקרוב הן על גילויים של רציפות הן על תהליכי שינוי ותמורה באסלאם לדורותיו בסוגיות מורכבות דוגמת יחסי דת ומדינה, תפיסת הג'האד והיחס למיעוטים דתיים או לתרבות המערב הנוצרית. סוגיות אלו קיבלו משנה תוקף בתקופה המודרנית, בעיקר מסוף המאה ה-18, לאחר שחברות מוסלמיות נאלצו להתמודד עם קולוניאליזם אירופי, תהפוכות פוליטיות, החרפת שסעים חברתיים והכלכליים ומשברי תרבות וזהות. הצורך בספר מבוא מקיף ומעודכן לסטודנטים ולקוראים משכילים נעשה חיוני, והופעת הספר היא דבר בעתו. הפרקים שבו משקפים את חידושי המחקר בעשרות השנים האחרונות. פרט למידע ולחומרים החדשים יש בספר גם תובנות רבות, ובנושאים לא מעטים נבחנות בו מחדש גישות שהיו מקובלות עד כה ושעתה אפשר לראותן באור חדש"-- מן האתר של ההוצאה.
