"בראשית שנות האלפיים חלחלה לתודעה הישראלית תופעת העוני החדש: תחושת עוני של נשים וגברים נורמטיביים, בעלי השכלה ומקצוע, ותיקים בארץ, המתקשים להתמודד עם דרישות הקיום. היו מהם שהפגינו בשדרות ערינו בקיץ 2011, ואחרים שהתביישו להכריז בפרהסיה על צורכיהם. יש מהם שאף דנים באפשרות לעזוב את הארץ מסיבות אלה. עניים אלה הם אנחנו, ובעיקר הצעירים החיים בארץ הזאת, מאותגרים כלכלית, רוצים לחיות, לא רק לשרוד. במשך שנה ראיינה המחברת אנשים ונשים במגוון גילים שנענו לקריאתה האינטרנטית, הגדירו עצמם עניים חדשים ובאו לספר את סיפורם - כיצד הגיעו למצב הנוכחי, ובמה הם תולים את עוניָם. מתוך כך ברור מהו עוני בעיניהם: חישובים אם כדאי לקנות מילקי במרכול; אם להזמין חבר לארוחת ערב; אם אפשר לקנות כרטיסייה חודשית לאוטובוס. יש הקושרים את מצבם בכישלון מערכתי ואחרים מאשימים את עצמם. בסיפורי החיים מתגלה הדמיון ביניהם וגם כיצד כל אחד הוא ייחודי ואחר". -- מהמעטפת האחורית.
