"ב־3 במאי 1937 המריאה ספינת האוויר היוקרתית 'הינדנבורג' של חברת צפלין מפרנקפורט לנירג'רזי שבארצות־הברית, כשעל סיפונה 97 נוסעים ואנשי צוות. שלושה ימים לאחר מכן, בתוך 34 שניות בלבד, נשרפה כליל וגבתה את חייהם של 36 נשים, גברים וילדים. תיאוריות שונות נכתבו על הסיבות להתרסקותו של הצפלין הענק: אחת גרסה שכדור אקדח נורה בטעות או במכוון לעבר אחד ממכלי המימן, אחרת טענה שהייתה זו הצתה מכוונת או חבלה במתקן העגינה. אבל חקירת המקרה על ידי ועדה מיוחדת העלתה חרס. בכל הראיונות המתועדים תיארו השורדים את הטיסה כ"שגרתית עד כדי שעמום". טייסת החלומות מציע גרסה בדיונית של האירועים בשלושת הימים האלה. הוא מביא את סיפוריהם של כמה מהנוסעים ומאנשי הצוות שהיו על ה'הינדנבורג' באותה טיסה גורלית: הנווט המחזר אחרי הדיילת המפוחדת שמסתירה סוד גדול, אהבת בוסר בין נוסעת צעירה לנער הסיפון, עיתונאית גרמנייה שנמצאת ברשימה השחורה של הגסטפו ואיש עסקים אמריקאי עלום־שם שמחפש נקמה. ; אריאל לוהון השתמשה בשמותיהם האמיתיים ובכמה מפרטי חייהם של נוסעי ה'הינדנבורג' כדי ליצור מותחן מרתק על אודות אחת הטיסות המפורסמות והטראגיות ביותר בהיסטוריה של התעופה"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
