"ביוני 1940 העניק ארישטידש דה סוזה מנדש, קונסול פורטוגל בבורדו ... אלפי אשרות כניסה ליהודים שביקשו להימלט מצרפת הכבושה בידי הצבא הגרמני. בזכות מעשיו הם הגיעו לליסבון, נמל היציאה היחיד מאירופה, הרחק מזירת המלחמה, כדי להגר למדינות שמעבר לים. הוא עשה זאת בניגוד למדיניות ההגירה של פורטוגל, לחוקיה ולרצון העומד בראשה, הדיקטטור אנטוניו דה אוליביירה סלזאר ... כיוון שסוזה מנדש לא נשמע להוראת הממונים עליו והפר את הכללים, הוא אולץ לחזור לליסבון. שם עבר הליך משפטי אשר הביא לסילוקו ממשרד החוץ ולאיבוד מקור פרנסתו, בנוסף לפגיעה בכבודו ובמעמדו סבלה משפחתו הענפה ממחסור, עוני ורעב. ב-3 באפריל 1954 נפטר ארישטידש דה סוזה מנדש והוא אדם שבור ומושפל. באוקטובר 1966, הכיר יד ושם בסוזה מנדש כחסיד אומות העולם, הכרה שהפכה במרוצת השנים לציון דרך משמעותי במסע לטיהור שמו בארצו - פורטוגל." -- עמוד 3.
