"אִיסְלָה ואחיה פִּירִי הם שני שועלים צעירים שחיים בגבול ארצם של "החשׂוּפים" - בני-האדם. חייו של השועל מלאים סכנות, אבל אִיסְלָה מתחילה ללמוד את המיוּמנוּיוֹת המסתוריות שנועדו לעזור לה להישאר בחיים. ואז קורה משהו בלתי-נתפס. אִיסְלָה חוזרת למאורה שלה ומגלה שהיא בוערת ומוקפת שועלים זרים - ושאין שום זֵכר למשפחה שלה. היא נאלצת לברוח, להימלט אל עולמם הקר והאפור של החשׂוּפים. עכשיו אִיסְלָה צריכה למצוא את דרכה במקום הקטלני והמבלבל הזה. תוך כדי מנוסה מאויב אכזר שמנסה לצוד אותה. כדי לשרוד היא תצטרך לפתח שליטה באוּמנוּיוֹת העתיקות של בני מינה - כישורי עורמה מאגיים שידועים לשועלים בלבד. היא תצטרך לגלות את סודות השוּכּישוּף.
