"הספר הקטן והמקסים הזה הוא אחת ההפתעות המו"ליות הגדולות בשנים האחרונות. לכאורה, עניינו שולי - סיפור חייו של גאון עקשן שהמציא שעון מדויק להפליא שאיפשר ליורדי הים בתקופתו לאתר את קו אורך וכך לנווט בימים ... בעידן התגליות הגדולות היתה 'בעיית קו האורך' האתגר הגדול ביותר שניצב לפני המדענים, מאחר שהימאים לא היו מסוגלים לקבוע את קו האורך שהם נמצאים בו, איבדו רבים מהם את דרכם בים, ספינות רבות עלו על שרטון ואחרות היו טרף קל לשודדי הים. בשנת 1714 הציע הפרלמנט האנגלי פרס ששוויו הון עתק למי שיצליח למצוא שיטה מדויקת למדידת קו האורך. מדענים ידועי שם - מגלילאו גליליי ועד אייזק ניוטון - מיפו את השמים בהיותם בטוחים ששם טמונה התשובה, אלא שאז התייצג מול הממסד המדעי כולו אדם אחד, ג'ון הריסון שמו, שהעז להציע פתרון מכני - שעון שיציין את השעה המדויקת בלב ים - דבר ששום שעון עד אז לא היה מסוגל לעשות אפילו ביבשה והמרוץ החל ..." -- כריכה אחורית.
