"האיגרת אל העברים, מספרי הברית החדשה, היא מעין דרשה המיוסדת על שפעת כתובי מקרא. דרישת הפסוקים מאפשרת למחברהּ להעניק תוקף לחידושיו המהפכניים, החורגים הן מן המסורת היהודית הרחבה והן מזו שהתגבשה בקרב חסידי ישוע מנצרת. החיבור נוצר כתגובה למשבר אמוני: הגאולה טרם נשלמה, ורבים החלו מפקפקים בבואה ופרשו מן התנועה. האיגרת נועדה לעודד את המאמינים, לבשרם שהופעה שנייה של המשיח בוא תבוא, גם אם תתמהמה. המחבר גם שואף להעניק משמעות עליונה לתקופת ההמתנה – עם ישוע כמלכיצדק חדש המכהן במקדש השמימי – ובכך לאפשר את המשך קיום התנועה לאור דחיית הקץ. אופי תגובתו של מחברה הופכים את הדיון באיגרת להדגמה מאלפת של תפקוד האמונה המנסה להתגבר על שברו של חלום הגאולה המשיחית הקרובה. שמונה השיחות מתחקות אחר הנסיבות הדרמטיות לכתיבת האיגרת, אחר רעיונותיה, וקהל היעד המסתורי שלה (הכותרת 'אל העברים' נוספה לחיבור בשלב מאוחר יותר ואינה אלא בגדר ניחוש). כמו כן מתמקדות השיחות במהלכי פרשנותה של האיגרת למקרא, ובזיקתם לדפוסי המדרש שנהגו ביהדות בשלהי הבית השני. לעתים מהווה האיגרת עדות מוקדמת למסורות יהודיות העולות בספרות חז"ל המאוחרת בהרבה" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
