"יש העונדים סרט שחור סביב צווארם לשם יופי, ואחרים - כדי להסתיר סוד אפל ומצמרר. יש ארונות עץ עתיקים ובהם בגדים, ויש ארונות עץ עתיקים שמסתירים בתוכם ... הייתכן שאנו נתקלים השכם והערב במי שלפני מאות שנים הסתיימו חייהם? מדוע אינם עוזבים את עולמנו ומניחים לנו? מה מבוקשם? אם גם אתם מאמינים שקיימות רוחות מלבד אלה הנושבות בחוץ, קחו נשימה עמוקה ופתחו את הספר. באנגליה, בתחילת המאה הקודמת, שינתה המלכה הטובה את פניה, ובן־לילה נהייתה אכזרית. כל נתיניה פחדו ממנה פחד מוות. מתילדה בתה נחרדה לגלות שלבה של אמה התקשה ועיניה הטובות נעשו קרות ומטילות אימה. גם הנערה קתרינה, המשרתת האישית והנאמנה של מתילדה, לא הייתה עוד כתמול שלשום. היא התחילה להיעלם ולהופיע באורח מסתורי, לצווארה סרט שחור, פניה חיוורים ומבטה קפוא. מיהי התינוקת המגיעה לארמון ומה עולה בגורלה? מיהם שר הרהיטים ושר הזמן האימתניים המגיחים אל הארמון בחשאי? כיצד הם נראים וממה הם עשויים? ומי מלחש מתוך רהיטי העץ העתיקים שבארמון?" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
