"כששמחה הצעירה, בת למשפחת עולים דתית, נכנסת להריון מחוץ לנישואין, הסוד שלה נשמר בקנאות אימהית. אך עוד לפני שהיא מספיקה לבחור את שם בנה שרק יצא לאוויר העולם, הוא נלקח ממנה היישר לבית יתומים. התינוק עמנואל מתגלגל מבית מחסה אחד לשני, עובר דרך משפחות אומנה ופנימיות. כל השנים נשארת בלבו התקווה שאבא יבוא ויציל, שאבא יבוא והחיים יהיו טובים כמו של כל הילדים האחרים. אך לחידה מיהו אביו לא מוצא עמנואל פתרון. עד שיום אחד בעודו חייל במדים מגיעה שיחת טלפון שתשנה את חייו לעולמים. עם הרמזים החדשים יוצא עמנואל לפתור את חידת חייו וחיי אמו, ואולי אף למצוא לעצמו שקט ומשפחה. באומץ לב וכנות נדירה פורם עמנואל את סודות משפחתו ומתמודד עם שאלות קשות מנשוא. אולי אביו הוא בכלל האנס של אמו? אולי אהבוֹ? אולי מחלתה סיבכה את הכול? ואולי בכלל יש להשלים עם הגזרה ולחיות ללא זהות שלמה. זהו מסע מטלטל וחשוף אל עומק לבו של ילד שכל חפצו הוא באבא ובזהות אמתית, כואבת ככל שתהיה" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
