"'בד בבד' הוא סיפור צדו האחר של הקנבס. בכישרון, בתנופה ובהתלהבות מתחקה כרמלה רובין אחר גורלם של עשרות מציוריו של ראובן ועוברת עם הקורא כברת דרך שחוצה זמנים ויבשות. ציורים שאבדו ונתגלו, ציורים שנגנבו ונמצאו, ציורים שנשכחו מלב ונעלמו מעין - בסבלנות ובעין בולשת כרמלה מצרפת פרט לפרט, קו אל קו, וממלאת את הפערים. כך מישיר הספר מבט אל עולמם של אספנים ומספר סיפור של מאוויים ותשוקות, אכזבות וקנאות, ולעתים נדיבות ושאר רוח. רובין טווה בחן חוטים עדינים שקושרים את ציוריו של ראובן עם תולדות העליות הראשונות בארץ ישראל ועם ימיה הראשונים של המדינה. אך מפגשם של חולמים עם מושא חלומם הוא גם מפגש רווי פתוס וכאב עם מקום חדש וחלום ישן: לא לארץ ריקה באו החולמים, אלא לארץ שילידים אשר זוהי גם ארצם שתלו בה זית והכו בה שורש. רבים מציוריו של ראובן נענים לדרמה - לעתים בהיקסמות ללא גבול מבני המקום, לעתים בהפניית המבט הרחק מהם". -- מעטפת אחורית.
