"הכותרת שנשמעת כה פשוטה לא מצביעה על הדרך הארוכה ומלאת הצמתים והחתחתים בה פסעתי, דרך שהיתה זרועה מקומות ואנשים וסוגי אוכל למיניהם. תמיד הייתי שמן, שמן עליז בדרך כלל, שלא נתן למשמניו להפריע לו. הייתי תלמיד חְנון ומצטיין בילדותי והמשכתי להיות סטודנט חנון ומצטיין עד להיותי מרצה צעיר למדי, מורה כנראה בחסד לפי חוות דעת הסטודנטים (ציון לשבח על הסברים פשוטים לתהליכים היסטוריים מורכבים, לפי אחד מהם), המפרסם מאמרים בקביעות, שהרי אחרת לא הייתי שורד שם. יש לי יתרונות לא מעטים, ביניהם זכרון מעולה ויכולת לראות תמונת-על ולמקם בה את הפרטים. כל זה לא עזר לי בחיי האישיים, שבהם הפכתי להיות עיוור, מובל תמיד בידי נשים – בנות המין הלא מובן הזה, המסוגלות להכניע אותי מראש כאילו שמו חח באפי. אני גמיש, מקבל את כל הגחמות של בת הזוג, לא מתווכח, נוח ועובדה שנשים רוצות להיות אתי ובמיטתי. בכל פעם שנגמרה פרשיה הייתי מזמר לעצמי על עצמי: "כלבלב הו בידי בם בם" ונשבע לעצמי שלא עוד, ונשבר כשבפעם הבאה אחת מהן היתה עושה לי חיינדלעך" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
