"אמריקה סינגר היא נערה ממעמד חמש במדינת איליאה. כשהיא מקבלת זימון להשתתף כמועמדת בבחירה, תחרות בין 35 נערות על לבו של הנסיך מֶקסון ועל הכתר, משפחתה נלהבת מאוד מהאפשרות שנפתחת בפניהם לטפס בסולם המעמדות. אבל אמריקה לא מעוניינת להשתתף בתחרות. קודם כול, הנסיך מקסון הנוקשה והמתנשא כלל אינו מוצא חן בעיניה. אבל הסיבה האמיתית היא אהבתה הסודית והאסורה לאספן, בחור ממעמד שש, הנמוך אף משלה. אחרי לחץ בלתי-פוסק מצד משפחתה ומצד אספן עצמו, היא מוצאת את עצמה, בניגוד לרצונה, בארמון המפואר, מתמודדת מול 34 נערות נרגשות מרחבי הממלכה. רובן מגיעות ממעמדות גבוהים משלה, והן מתוחכמות ומנוסות ממנה בהרבה. המצב מסתבך עוד יותר כאשר היא פוגשת פנים אל פנים את הנסיך מקסון ונאלצת לבחון מחדש את חייה, את רצונותיה ואת תוכניותיה לעתיד. האם לרגשות יש מקום בתחרות כמו הבחירה? היכן נגמר המשחק ומתחילה המציאות?" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
