"הדבר היחיד שאייברי רו בת השש־עשרה רוצה הוא להיות מכשפה. היא מחכה לרגע שבו תוכל להחליף את סבתה בתפקיד המכשפה של האי פרינס, ולהמשיך להגן על האי ועל תושביו ציידי הלווייתנים. אבל לפני שאייברי מספיקה ללמוד את סודות הכישוף, אמה, נחושה לנתק את שושלת הקסם, חוטפת אותה ומעבירה אותה לבית מפואר בעיר ומטילה עליה קללה שתמנע ממנה לחזור לסבתה. תחילה אייברי בטוחה ששחרורה הוא רק עניין של זמן, אבל כעת, לאחר ארבע שנים שבהן רקמה תוכניות לברוח ולמצוא דרך להגשים את ייעודה, אייברי חולמת חלום מחריד, ומבינה שפירושו שהיא עומדת למות. להירצח. היא גם יודעת שהיא לא טועה, והדרך היחידה שלה להינצל היא לגלות את סודותיהן של אמה וסבתה. על סף ייאוש היא פוגשת את טאנה, נער מאי מרוחק, שניחן בכוחות קסם משלו. אייברי בטוחה שהוא זה שיוכל לסייע לה להשתחרר מקללתה של אמה ולהגן על האי מפני חורבן, ואילו טאנה בטוח שלאייברי יש כוחות שיכולים לסייע לו לנקום במי שגרם למות משפחתו. אך כשטאנה מעורר באייברי רגשות בעוצמה שלא הכירה, מתברר לה שכדי להפוך למכשפה עליה להקריב קורבן נורא ובלתי צפוי שהיא לא בטוחה שתוכל להקריבו" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
