"אופני תצוגה של מרחב מוזיאלי, מפעילים רצף מרכיבים היסטוריים-סיבתיים המעצבים באמצעים חזותיים את האופן בו ההיסטוריה מסופרת ונחווית. בעזרת שיטות איסוף, מיון, שימור, מחקר, תצוגה וחינוך, מנסה התצוגה המוזיאלית להמחיז נרטיב לינארי ומגמתי, שלא רק מצדיק את סמיכותם של מוצגים מסוימים המוצגים תחת קורת גג אחת, אלא גם מעורר תחושת שייכות והזדהות. עם התעוררותה של תודעה יהודית-לאומית בתחילת המאה התשע עשרה הוקמו בתי נכות יהודיים ברבות מערי אירופה. אלה תרמו רבות להצלתה של המורשת היהודית ולשימורה, כמו גם לקידום ההתחדשות הלאומית בארץ ישראל. “בצלאל”, אותו הקים בוריס שץ ב-1906 כביטוי ישיר לאותה התעוררות, היה סמל למפעל ציוני, מחקרי וחינוכי, שביסס לקסיקון איקונוגרפי יש מאין, ושיקף את השאיפות הלאומיות והתרבותיות. לצד “בצלאל” החל שץ לבנות אוסף שבמרכזו אלמנטים ארכיאולוגיים, בוטניים וזואולוגיים ארץ-ישראלים, כשחלק מינורי הוקדש לאמנות יהודית. היה זה מאגר של ידע שגויס במטרה לכונן סגנון עברי שישרת נרטיב ציוני חדש. התצוגה האקלקטית שאפיינה את בית הנכות הלאומי, נתפסת היום כמצבור מגובב של ראיות ומהווה מקרה מבחן מענין, המעורר שאלות ביחס לדימוי המוזיאון כהיכל-מיכל של ידע ותרבות". -- מההקדמה.
